The Interrogation

  1. Overall Mark: (11/20) Level 3 in marking scheme.

Match on action present but could have had some better/ more continuous shots to show you understood this concept
    180’ Rule is adhered to
Effective choice of music in the beginning
Lighting is a bit distracting. Maybe on a bigger screen it would be easier to watch. Watching on a PC Screen like I am, and like Camrbidge moderators will be, it is just too hard to see anything which is a pity. I feel you can keep the darkness and keep the ‘feel’ of the place being in darkness without completely blacking it out.
I like that you attempted effects within Premier Pro, the ‘white-out’ instead of the blackout when Miss Donavan is hit with the gun, the ringing that she maybe would have heard in her ears, the flashes that show she is struggling to see… all good attempts to create meaning although not greatly effective with no light. POV with Mr. White doesn’t make sense lighting-wise and neither does the squinting as though squinting into the light from Miss Donavan because there is no light (the white flashes may have made more sense if when Mr. White clicked, a light was turned on? Or to use a black out instead of a white-out?
Good use of music to build tension
Shot angles and camera positioning need some more thought, work and practise. Height of camera differs in many shots and the angle means although there are close up’s, the ability for the audience to really engage with the emotion of the actors isn’t really there (it’s a sort of CCTV feel, a bit disconnected from the characters). Also watch space in the shot, creating a tighter shot could speaks to the fact that Miss Donavan is trapped and may have helped create more tension and suspense.
Effective use of sound effects with the heartbeat when the pace changes to imminent danger
I like that you changed the soundtrack at the point that you did, the sound was well thought out. It gives the impression that things aren’t over, that something exciting is going to happen and that Mr. White is going into the rest of the movie on a mission.
I like the contrast between light and dark when you have it visible. Going in and out of the door (between the light outside/normal world and the dark world of Mr. White that begins and ends the movie.
Music levels are well done with the ending into the credits going louder to emphasise Mr. White leaving the scene.
Credits are a bit fast but match the music well and the title is an interesting choice, showing an almost ghostly white handkerchief that represents Mr. White on a black, blank screen. The font gives an impression of a more sophisticated gangster / mob culture, making me think of the old newspapers, not sure if that was the look and feel you were going for? I like it though.

Overall a good first opening sequence attempt. You are showing developing production skills that, as you refine them, will produce better quality next time around. Most of your downfalls in this project are from the planning phase. The editing you did, working with what you had, was a really good attempt. My only advice would be to not get too attached to an idea that will potentially bring your mark down. I know you liked the idea of a dark film but at the end of the day, that creative call lost you marks because it was too difficult to see the finished product. My advice is to do some research for PT 2 on the look and feel you want and how to recreate that effectively.

  2. T. Marcus' Comments:
Title goes at beginning of a piece, not the end. Or not JUST the end.
Too many white-outs. More intentional thought needed for that whole middle segment in terms of transitions in order to achieve the 'dizzy and disoriented because I just woke up from getting pistol-whipped' effect.
Again, no "shot-reverse-shot," which could possibly have lifted this to a 12 or 13.
Dark, mysterious, dangerous and confusing is different from "I can't see what's going on."
Visual narrative is mainly clear, though we miss the spitting from Miss Donavan. This creates a certain amount of confusion for the viewer.
Strong attention to sound across visual transitions. Well done.
