Preliminary task 1 - Planning

The Interrogation

This is our first Preliminary task and our first film of the year. In this film we had to use the conventions and techniques of Match on action, Shot reverse shot and 180-degree rule.
We had to follow the theme of a thriller and thus decided to go with an interrogation as our plot hence the title. In our short clip, we have the main characters Mr Pink and Mrs Donavan. We decided to pursue a theme of light vs dark and the tone of heightened tension.

Initial Plan:

The initial plan was created by me and max after a quick brainstorm. We knew that we had to use the theme of a thriller and thus chose an interrogation where one character is clearly dominating the other. We made many changes to the basic plot and to characters later on, as we made progress through cutting scenes for time or the changing of the cast due to time differences
   1)    Miss Donavan (Izzy) gets dragged by 2 henchmen (Tina&Rhys) cut to scene POV duffel bag to opening of door
2)    Henchmen push Miss Donavan on too chair -> dialogue
è Mr pink comes from shadows gun in hand smacks Miss Donavan in head, cut to scene of falling to landing
è Slowly climbs back up to the chair
3)    Mr pink sits down clicks finger pulls out pink handkerchief wipes gun, puts on the table, the bag comes off  match on action. Cut to scene of bright camera shot shaky pov of Donovan, pinks body slightly visible but the head is completely white. Cut to scene of over the shoulder shot of Donavan face tears, bruises cuts, act blinded & confused dazed due to not seeing light in a while
4)    Dialogue(pink), blue comes up serves water cleans table dialogue(Donavan) pink smacks table water spills over blue shocked retreats back into shadow. Dialogue (pink) Donavan spits in retaliation, pink clicks fingers henchmen come out of shadows pull Donavan back into shadow pink straighten jacket swipes shoulder push the chair in, walks off into shadow camera follows.

Roles:

Key: M= Max
        V= Vernnon
After finalising a basic plot, we then moved on to who would do what role in the making of this film. In this, we played off our individual skill sets and set our roles to the skills we know we have and are capable of using.

Script:
For this preliminary task, I was in charge of the script. At first, I had a made a script based on our rough plan.

For the first draft of the script click here.

This first draft was changed a lot as we progressed on with the planning of our storyboard, realising that one of the characters (Blue) despite his minor role had an individual shot that was just unnecessary and thus we decided to cut him and I made the changes to the script respectively.

For the second draft of the script click here.

With this second draft, we used it to shoot 2 scenes however we realised that many of our cast had clashing schedules and thus we had to cut another character (2nd henchmen) who did not really have a big role in this film and we also had to change the cast around. We also had to change it from henchwomen to henchmen.

For the final draft of the script click here.

For our final draft, we finalised it as our finished script and we used it for the filming of our short film. The changes mad really helped our film, as we were able to have more time to film more important scenes and fewer characters, meant fewer actors we had to worry about and also helped decrease filming time.

Overall, what the main characters Mr Pink and Mrs Donavann say, did not change throughout the drafts and finalisations as I felt the dialogue itself, despite having only 2 sentences being exchanged, they really conveyed the theme and tone we were going after. May it be the change from addressing Mrs Donavan to just Donavan, shows the anger coming from Mr Pink and the potential familiarity between the two characters.

Shot list:
For the shot list, it was Max's job to identify the time needed for each shot which we actually helped establish together however he solely identified the different shots we would use for each scene and he also listed the different props required for each scene, which gave us a quick and easier reference for each scene.

Talent:
The picking and establishing with the talent was my job and at first, we had five characters:

  • Mrs Donavan (Isabelle Managh)
  • Mr Pink (Tristan Holland)
  • Blue (Joshua Leaman)
  • Henchmen 1 ( Rhys Holland)
  • Henchwoman 1 ( Christina Low)
Throughout the process, we had to cut all the actors and the characters of the henchwoman and blue. and now we were left with just three characters.
  • Mrs Donavan (not established will edit when done so)
  • Mr Pink (Teacher Marcus)
  • Henchman (not established will edit when done so)
Equipment:
I was in charge of organising what equipment we would be needing for our shoot and at first, I had put down 3 cameras but I then changed it to just two, one for active use and one as a backup.

Location:
Max was in charge of scouting and the decision for a filming location and at first, we steeled for the double classroom however after our major overhaul in changes, he decided that the double classroom was next to classes and a common walkway and thus, would naturally be very loud and noisy. It was also too big and there were too many unnecessary signs and sources of light and thus we decided to change and use the salvation room which was significantly smaller but more practical and quiet.

Opening Sequences

Purpose:
The purpose of an opening sequence is to give recognition, credit and promotion to the main people that had made the film possible and to give the audience a preview of the film through a range of subtle features and techniques, which gives the audience a hint to the overall theme and tone. The opening sequence also gives the companies that had financed the film recognition and advertisement. These sequences usually range from 2-3 minutes long.

Difference between Opening credits and Title sequences:

Opening credits list the more important actors (main characters in the film), directors and writers due to the core importance they play in the film. However, on the other hand, a title sequence includes the opening credits but also consists of all of the technical elements that make the opening credits work E.G. Music, Typography, Enigma Etc

Different techniques used in an opening sequence:

An opening sequence has a lot of technical elements put into it in other to somehow connect with the actual plot of the story whether it may range from having a red bloody background if its a thriller or even a bright colourful background to amplify the fact that it is a children's film.
Music plays one of the biggest roles in an opening sequence as one does not usually find the jaws theme being played in a children's film about water like "Free Willy". Music helps set up the general theme and tone of the movie and a good example of this would be "Alien Resurrection", where the melancholy like music which is also amplified by the certain sense of fear you get from just how eerie it sounds, helps promote and set up the tone and mood of horror and fear. This opening sequence helps promote the fear factor even before the movie starts thus even if a long build up is present before any of the horror action starts, the audiences would still be reminded form the opening sequence that this is a horror movie and thus would be held at the end of their seats in an anticipation for the horror

Another technique used an Enigma code. An enigma code, which originates from the Barthes' Enigma code, is when a scene is played which causes the audience to question it and is answered shortly during the film. This causes the audience to have questions even before the films kicks into gear this enables the audience to get intrigued by the film due to the need of finding an answer to the scene and thus will keep their interest levels at a high. An enigma code also helps the narrative flow. A good example of an enigma code being used effectively would be "Enemy of the state". The assassination of the senator raises questions as the audience would have no idea why he was assassinated in the first place, this question is then answered later on in the film but the initial confusion on why would have kept the audience's eyes peeled onto the screen in anticipation for an explanation.

Modern Thriller: Queen of Earth: Watch opening sequence here

The modern thriller I have chosen is "Queen of Earth". This film is a psychological thriller which follows the mental breakdown of our main character Catherine. The opening sequence applies the technique of an enigma code as we see Catherine laugh and smile we don't know what is going on at that point in time but we can easily tell that something is not right due to the creepiness and almost possessed smile she has this effect is emphasised by the fact that there is the lack of sound as the shot is joint by the sound of emptiness which is looked at symbolically, "silence can drive one crazy" maybe be a subtle hint on the directors part.  This automatically causes us to the audience to come up with our own conclusions on why she is like this and thus will get more engrossed in the film to see if we were right or not.

As the shot is paused and words start to come on screen music starts to play, the music choice for the opening sequence is very effective due to the music having an almost repetitive feeling the music also send shivers down ones spine due to the eeriness and psychotic vibe that one gets from it the music is very melancholic but yet still inflicts the feeling of potentially ones mentally broken brain. The typography that is used to list the actors and the production crew is repeated throughout the screen in the same font and colour this again supports the theory that this may be inside ones mentally broken brain as the repetitiveness drives the audiences up the wall inflicting onto the very basic stages of a mental breakdown.

Hitchcock Film: Psycho(1980)Watch the opening sequence here
Hitchcock uses different techniques in his opening sequence for this film Psycho. One of these features is the music just like my pick of a modern thriller. The music in the opening sequence is your typical horror music where the tempo gets built up, mimicking one heartbeat when they witness something horrifying. The music also has a heavy influence of the violin where its high pitched notes maybe a gesture of a scream, fitting the theme of the film very well. The music helps build intensity and fear due to this film being a supposed horror/thriller film and would have had the audiences awaiting a jump scare and thus increase their attention paid towards the film.

Hitchcock uses the effect of transitions for the texts to create a very caged effect due to the different lines joining each other and in each scene, the lines come from different direction, creating almost a cage like image and thus puts an emphasis on the fact that later on the main character is caged in and trapped wiht a killer. the lines could also be perceived as blood flowing.

The contrast of techniques:
In both films, the use of music is present in both and actually plays a big part in creating the atmosphere and theme for both films. However, both films do lack in the department of mise-en-scene and whilst "Queen of Earth", uses camera shots rather effectively as an enigma code, Hitchcock however, lacks any sort of moving video what so ever probably due to the lack of technology back then in the black and white era. Editing wise, Hitchcock uses transitions of the words through the use of bars that flow onto the screen and of it just as the text combines together this as said prior, creates a cage-like effect and thus the feeling of being trapped however on the other hand, there is very little editing in the opening sequence of "Queen of Earth" and it relies more on the use of typography to provide the effect of repetition and potentially the thoughts of a person that has been mentally broken.

AS Media Studies Textbook Activity 2.7

This activity from the textbook is based on the depiction of a teenagers life and the issues, the different aspects and relationships they go through versus that of reality.
We had to watch a teen drama of our choice where in this case, I had a chosen the Disney teen drama "Boy meets world". After watching an episode of your chosen drama, we had to find different examples of the following key issues, "Serious social issues relating to teenagers", "Everyday aspects of teenage life" and " Teenage relationships". After finding different examples, we had to conduct a content analysis and find out how big of a percentage each key issue had played a part of in the chosen episode. We then have to write a short essay on the topic of how relevant this show is to my life.

Boy meets world Season 5 Episode 24

Serious social issues relating to teenagers:

  • Bullying
  • LIfe after school
  • Relationships vs school
  • Relationship with the school - What has the school done for you, What have you learnt from being there etc
  • Letting go - Learning that you have to move on in life. E.G. High school is just another chapter in your life.
Total percentage: 35.7%

Everyday aspects of teenage life:
  • Wanting school to be over
  • Choices of what path to take after leaving school - College, Work etc
  • A teacher retiring/ leaving that you are close too - How would you react, What would you do for him or her
  • The feud with and the resolution to the problem or in extreme cases the ending or friendships
  • The problems that come with having a romantic relationship in school
Total percentage: 35.7%

Teenage relationships:
  • Romantic
  • Friendships
  • Sibling
  • Teacher
Total percentage: 28.6%

The show "Boy meets world", has an accurate view and recreation of the realism of teenage dramas compared to other teen dramas. The realism of the topics presented to us as the audience which is big part teenagers and younger children due to the producers being Disney,
causes a stirred interest amongst the audience wheteher it be a younger audience or a more mature teen audience compared to more unrealistic teen dramas like "Riverdale" or "Teen Wolf". However, this show does lack despite the realistic themes, relevance to this day and age, due to it being a show that was produced in 1993 and thus its idea on extraordinary and ordinary may be very different to what we consider the norm today. However, despite the lack of relevance to this day and age,  I find that this actually reflects the daily aspects of my life quite well, with even the reference to a close relationship between the teacher and students being touched on by this show and even its topic, on a close teacher leaving had just happened in my life recently as well. This teen drama is very relevant to me as my life is rather ordinary compared to other teenagers who may lead what may be considered to be an "exciting" life, the shows rather simplistic themes and tones, really reflects on how ordinary and simplistic my life is regarding the examples presented by the show based of the 3 key issues of a teenagers life
