Preliminary Task 2

Preliminary Task 2

  1. Comments and suggestions:

    - Title needs to be more impacting. Could have used a pause or a bigger font to make more of a statement?

    - continuity needs attention. Going from night to day to evening in the space of a few seconds feels very rushed and the passing of time isn't very clear, especially with Liv leaving home in the morning (seemingly after getting straight out of bed) and the next scene with her arriving home supposedly after a day out.

    - a close-up of the ring in the first scene would have perhaps helped the audience recognise it's importance. The scene happens quite fast and initially it's easy to miss that she has put a ring down and that it's gone in the morning because as a new character is being introduced in a new surrounding, we aren't focusing on the ring. Close-up's or zooms are a good way of drawing the audiences attention to an object of importance.

    - good use of close-up and heartbeat sound effect to show emotion and build tension

    - sound levels are noticeably different for the 'where should we meet? The usual" part. I like the voice distortion but the background noise is distracting.

    - I feel like the audience is told with close-up's and music/ sound effect that the guy at the meeting place is important but with no photo in the first scene, we have no idea who he is, why she is surprised, why she starts chasing him and why he runs. I feel like the photo you initially discussed as being next to the bed would have showed the audience that he was the husband.

-The chase scene wasn't as seamless as it could have been. It seemed a bit odd that they ran off the road and then emerged back onto the road. Maybe him disappearing into the bush and leaving her to find the bag in the bush may have been better?

    - I like the handheld action shot of the chase scene. Match on action needed to be more seamless and continuous, the fade of shots as Liv opens the bag and gets the gun/ ring etc, out, needed to be a bit better edited together or re-shot so the footage lines up better.

    - Good flash-back scene. interesting director's choice to choose to explain the whole movie at the end. Would definitely keep the audience guessing.

    - great choice of music for the flash-back, I wouldn't have changed it for the titles. The title music is at a different pace and almost a downer after all the action.

Overall I really enjoyed the concept of your short film. I think it was definitely an ambitious (maybe over-ambitious) attempt to try fit that whole storyline into 2 minutes. I think if you guys had a longer time restraint, you would have the makings of a very interesting movie. My suggestion is for you to keep it simple and keep it basic enough to communicate meaning to the audience in that short space of time. trying to pack too much story into 2 minutes will leave the audience confused and the film clip has a rushed feel. Just watch things like continuity for your Foundation Portfolio, filming needs to be so well planned that you know what shots need to fit together from pre-production, so footage is seamless and not disjointed.

This is definitely a step up from PT 1. Looking forward to seeing you really up your game and push yourself for creativity and excellence in your Foundation Portfolio.

    Overall Score 12/20
