AS Media Studies Textbook Activity 2.7

This activity from the textbook is based on the depiction of a teenagers life and the issues, the different aspects and relationships they go through versus that of reality.
We had to watch a teen drama of our choice where in this case, I had a chosen the Disney teen drama "Boy meets world". After watching an episode of your chosen drama, we had to find different examples of the following key issues, "Serious social issues relating to teenagers", "Everyday aspects of teenage life" and " Teenage relationships". After finding different examples, we had to conduct a content analysis and find out how big of a percentage each key issue had played a part of in the chosen episode. We then have to write a short essay on the topic of how relevant this show is to my life.

Boy meets world Season 5 Episode 24

Serious social issues relating to teenagers:

  • Bullying
  • LIfe after school
  • Relationships vs school
  • Relationship with the school - What has the school done for you, What have you learnt from being there etc
  • Letting go - Learning that you have to move on in life. E.G. High school is just another chapter in your life.
Total percentage: 35.7%

Everyday aspects of teenage life:
  • Wanting school to be over
  • Choices of what path to take after leaving school - College, Work etc
  • A teacher retiring/ leaving that you are close too - How would you react, What would you do for him or her
  • The feud with and the resolution to the problem or in extreme cases the ending or friendships
  • The problems that come with having a romantic relationship in school
Total percentage: 35.7%

Teenage relationships:
  • Romantic
  • Friendships
  • Sibling
  • Teacher
Total percentage: 28.6%

The show "Boy meets world", has an accurate view and recreation of the realism of teenage dramas compared to other teen dramas. The realism of the topics presented to us as the audience which is big part teenagers and younger children due to the producers being Disney,
causes a stirred interest amongst the audience wheteher it be a younger audience or a more mature teen audience compared to more unrealistic teen dramas like "Riverdale" or "Teen Wolf". However, this show does lack despite the realistic themes, relevance to this day and age, due to it being a show that was produced in 1993 and thus its idea on extraordinary and ordinary may be very different to what we consider the norm today. However, despite the lack of relevance to this day and age,  I find that this actually reflects the daily aspects of my life quite well, with even the reference to a close relationship between the teacher and students being touched on by this show and even its topic, on a close teacher leaving had just happened in my life recently as well. This teen drama is very relevant to me as my life is rather ordinary compared to other teenagers who may lead what may be considered to be an "exciting" life, the shows rather simplistic themes and tones, really reflects on how ordinary and simplistic my life is regarding the examples presented by the show based of the 3 key issues of a teenagers life

  1. Hi Vernnon

Here are some points for consideration regarding your blog post for this week's homework:

    - Good layout (clear and easy to read in how it’s set out)

    - Accurate and insightful recognition of social issues, aspects to teenage life and teenage relationships listed (although would ‘letting go’ perhaps fit under everyday aspects of life rather than wide-scale social issue?)

    - End paragraph drew interesting and more multi-dimensional conclusions by referring to the year this show was made as well as comparison to other teen dramas on TV at the moment

    - Although I appreciate the overall point being about 1. being able to relate in terms of the teacher leaving and 2. the ‘ordinary-ness’ of teenage life as reflected in the show, perhaps a few more examples of some of the other teen issues and how they relate to your life or how they affect those around you that in turn affects you, may have added even more to an already in depth analysis? (bullying – is this something you’ve encountered or something you’re constantly aware of because it’s so prevalent in the youth culture? )

    - Mostly quite widescale considerations, yet they end up feeling like general musings to self because you brings up these great topics and then doesn't go into any of them. Need to explore examples from the extract and then apply them to your personal life experience. Higher marks would be gained by doing that and then also considering wider societal applications. In essence, you bring up a lot of good ideas in bulletpoint but don't explain or evaluate any of them.

Overall I am pleased with your effort and I can see improvement from your last homework assignment already. I know that as you put these points into action, your work will continue to improve as you learn what Cambridge is expecting of you. Keep digging deep, keep stretching yourself! You're on the right track :)

    Score: 13/25
